Jazz

The mostly widely recognised form of dance, Jazz covers many forms and variations in its style - often dictated by the choice of music which can range from the latest pop songs, rock classics, a slow ballad or a musical theatre piece. Students are taught the correct technique for skills such as jumps, kicks and turns along with expression and performance skills. The Edge offers specialised Jazz classes for all ages ranging from Primary school students to Senior/Advanced standard.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop dance is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to Hip Hop music or that have evolved as part of Hip Hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The Edge’s Hip Hop classes are influenced by individual choreographers and teachers, as each person has their own unique style and their own experiences within this fusion style of dance. Current music and movement trends are often reflected in these classes to allow our students to be up to date with this modern style of dance.

CLASSICAL BALLET

Classical ballet provides a strong basis of technique for students to adapt to all other technical dance styles, like Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and Lyrical. Students are taught to implement core strength, postural awareness and centre balance whilst developing a grace and flow inherent in this romantic and ‘classic’ style of the ages. The Edge follows the R.A.D syllabus and offers students the opportunity to train for and complete their R.A.D exams (primary to intermediate grades)

Contemporary

Contemporary is a form of dance influenced mostly by classical ballet and modern dance. Contemporary technique is derived from classical ballet, although it permits a greater range of movement that may not adhere to the strict classical body lines, including floor work, flat foot and parallel placement of the legs. Contemporary styles differ greatly depending on choreographer experience and style along with the influence of current musical and popular culture trends.

Tap

Students learn skills of time, beats and rhythm, gradually increasing the speed of execution and accuracy of steps. Students attain the ability to be able to perform all steps with clear accurate sounds. Working through combinations with increases in timing and rhythmic patterns.

ADULT DANCE

Adult classes are fun and fiesty! Get a great workout whilst dancing your butt off with like minded adults who have a shared love of dance. Our Adult class competes in both Pom and Hip Hop styles, throughout the year at the AASCF competitions! They are NATIONAL champions in Hip Hop!

ACRO DANCE

Acro dance is a style that combines dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, unique choreography and its use of acrobatics. Skills learnt and displayed include partner work (stunts and lifts) and tumbling skills (forward and backward walk overs, cartwheels, aerials, round offs, hand springs and forward and backward tucks). It is a popular style in amateur competitions as well as in professional dance theatre. This style can be seen in contemporary circus productions such as those performed by Cirque du Soleil.

Acro dance is especially challenging as it requires dancers to be trained in both dance and acrobatic skills and as such, students considering Acro Dance will be required to enrol in at least one other (any) dance style at The Edge to ensure that all elements of technique are covered appropriately.

POM

Pom refers to the ‘Pom Poms’ that are held by dancers in this energetic, fast and precise style of dance. Not cheerleading, Pom incorporates the use of proper pom motion technique that is sharp, clean and precise while incorporating other dance styles including jazz and hip hop. Originating in the US from Cheerleading, Pom has evolved into it’s very own style with Classical Ballet and Jazz technique a must in order to execute the motions and skills effectively and precisely. At The Edge we only offer Pom classes to our competitive teams.
